Impacts of Climate Extremes to Interstate and Local Trucking Industries

CLIMAS Lead:

Highway transportation forms the basis of our economy, moves goods from place to place, and connects communities. Building on existing partnerships between CLIMAS and state transportation managers from New Mexico and Arizona, we address the impacts of extreme drought and dust storms on our transportation system. Our main goal is to increase driver safety during these events. Our project starts in southwestern New Mexico along Interstate 10 where lives have been lost as a result of dust storms. Our partners include the New Mexico Department of Transportation and trucking companies who are interested in improving the way they handle these dust storms through education and warning. This project will characterize and document the climatic and visual conditions that exist during these storms through interviews, time-lapse camera imagery, and dashboard cameras.
