Water sources in Arizona include surface water from lakes, streams, and rivers, groundwater stored in natural reservoirs beneath the Earth's surface, and effluent reclaimed from wastewater. A large portion of surface water comes from the Colorado River, with water laws giving Arizona 2.8 million acre feet annually. The Central Arizona Project's (CAP) canal system also delivers Colorado River water to Maricopa, Pinal, and Pima counties—including the two largest urban areas in the state.
