Maps of the linear correlation (Pearson's r) between (a) winter precipitation and the Pacific North America index (PNA) and (b) winter temperature and the North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAO). Previous research at other institutions has shown strong relationships between the PNA index and the climate of other parts of North America; similarly previous research has shown strong relationships between the NAO index and the climate of Europe. The results presented here indicate that climate predictions for the Southwest might be improved by the inclusion of these indices.
