Patrick received a B.S. in anthropology and zoology and completed the post-graduate Naturalist-Ecologist Training Program at the University of Michigan, and earned an M.S. in ecology from the University of Vermont's Field Naturalist Program. He has been awarded fellowships from the Mellon Foundation, Switzer Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire) in sustainable aquaculture, and two years as TNC's Zambezi River Basin Program. He initiated TNC's New Mexico Climate Change Ecology and Adaptation Project, Southwestern Fire Learning Network, and other statewide and regional conservation initiatives.
