Monsoon Region Climate Applications: a Binational Workshop

Travel Information

Guaymas has an international airport with flights from the United States primarily through Phoenix and Tucson. Most flights from the US arrive in Guaymas in the afternoon, so the workshop is scheduled so that participants can arrive Monday afternoon and depart Thursday afternoon. Mexican participants should be able to make similar arrangements. An alternate route to Guaymas is to fly into the Hermosillo airport and take a bus to Guaymas, see directions below.

Flights to and from the United States are limited, though, so make your reservations soon if you must travel on those days—or plan to come early or stay late. Guaymas is a lovely old Mexican town with many things to see in town and in the area!

There will be an optional field trip on Friday for those who are interested in visiting the agricultural region south of Guaymas, including the reservoirs that supply it and a NAME field site.

We have a limited amount of funding for supporting travel, if you would like to apply for support, please send a request by 5 April 2006 with an estimate of the amount needed (e.g. transportation, hotel, per diem) to Andrea Ray at andrea.ray@noaa.gov.

Bus Directions to Guaymas (from Hermosillo airport)

There are more flights to Hermosillo than Guaymas, so you might consider using the TUFESA bus. The TUFESA buses are comfortable, generally run on schedule, and take about an hour to get to Guaymas. They depart from Hermosillo to Guaymas every 30 minutes during the day (5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.) and every hour during the night (11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.).

For a schedule, see http://www.tufesa.com.mx, select "Información sobre Pasaje," and choose Hermosillo on "Seleccion su ciudad" or "Choose your city." The English version of the main page wasn't working as of April 5, 2006, but you can access the English version of the schedule information pages by selecting the U.S. flag near the top center of the page.

At the Hermosillo airport, get a taxi (approximately 150 pesos/ $15), and ask the driver to go to TUFESA bus station at Blvd. Luis Encinas and Ferrocarril #393, in Hermosillo. You can buy a ticket at the bus station (approximately 80 pesos/$8).

Arriving at Guaymas bus station, taxis are available outside the bus station. Ask the driver to go to Hotel Playa De Cortes (approximately 60 pesos/$6).

For additional information visit the TUFESA Web site or email local host Luis Brito at lbrito04@cibnor.mx.
